Footwear is considered an important part of one’s personality. Well-maintained footwear explains many things about the owner, his choice. Although the intricacy of this craft may have been lost to modernization, but their influences are still present in shoes today.
Khussa or Mojari is the traditional handcrafted foot-wear of Punjab which is in trend from the era of Mughal’s till now. It was known as the royal footwear during the Mughal era as it was mostly worn by the kings. At the Lahore Museum, there is a variety of archaic shoes (Khussas) which were popular in that era are displayed in the Islamic Gallery. This is very popular in village sides, but now it is very much common and can be worn by men and women as well. It is commonly worn with Shalwar Kameez styled outfits, but at wedding groom wears it with his Sherwani (Traditional Dress for Groom) as it compliments his dress.
It is specially designed by artisans mostly using vegetable-tanned leather. The upper is made of leather or textile embroidered with brass nails, cowry shells, mirrors, bells and ceramic beads embedded on it. Even the upper and lower sole is bonded with cotton thread and holds them with firm and strength. There are different styles of this footwear.
